Who Should Pursue the Board Certification?

Ambitious professionals ready to elevate their leadership skills and stand out. Ideal for emerging leaders, seasoned managers, and visionary executives across all industries, this credential validates that you are equipped with the techniques to lead with confidence and inspire impact.

  • Component 1

    Knowledge of ethical issues, planning for addressing challenges, selection of techniques, Application of techniques, leadership theory, and establishment and maintenance of a positive climate.

  • Component 2

    Self-assessment, data analysis, instructional design, implementation, and reflective practice. The assessment evaluates candidates' ability to analyze data, design and execute strategies, and reflect on leadership practice based on outcomes.

  • Component 3

    Ability to plan, execute, and reflect on leadership interactions, and creating positive and engaging environments.

  • Component 4

    Utilizing assessment data, reflecting on practice, and collaborating for positive changes in their organization. It underscores applying knowledge, reflective practice, and using assessment data to inform decisions and foster growth.

  • Education

    Possess a high school diploma / GED, or equivalent. 

  • Experience

    No less than three years of leadership experience.

Components of Certification

The National Board certification process is designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished practice. Candidates are required to complete four components. 

Component 1

The Assessment.

Content Knowledge is a computer-based assessment where candidates showcase their understanding of leadership practices in their specific field. They must demonstrate mastery of developmentally appropriate content essential for effective leadership within their community of practice.

Component 1 is assessed through the completion of three vignettes and responses based on the three designated content areas described in the scoring criteria.

Criteria for Scoring.

Area 1: To achieve the highest score, your response must:

  • Accurately identify two ethics-related issues in leadership or leadership education.
  • Analyze how these issues will impact the community if left unaddressed.
  • Describe two effective strategies to tackle these issues, with a detailed explanation.

Area 2: To attain the highest score, your response must:

  • Describe a suitable technique for addressing a situation, outlining the leader's role and responsibilities.
  • Provide a well-founded rationale for choosing the technique, supported by relevant theory.

Area 3: To reach the highest score, your response must:

  • Identify and explain pertinent factors and information in a given situation.
  • Describe both individual and collective approaches for fostering a positive climate.
  • Justify the appropriateness of these approaches for the scenario described.

How this is Assessed.

The candidate will review a series of vignettes and select three. For each chosen vignette, they must respond to questions relevant to its content and themes, aligning these responses with their assessment areas.

Component 2

Overview.

Candidates are tasked with evaluating their individual leadership strengths and weaknesses, using this insight to design instructional activities aimed at overcoming challenges and leveraging strengths. This entry showcases the candidate's ability to self-assess, plan and implement effective strategies, and adjust based on ongoing assessment. All tasks and rubrics align with certificate area Standards.

Note: While the instructions emphasize self-reflection, candidates may opt to submit a portfolio entry detailing their work with a junior leader.

Portfolio Entry.

The task in this portfolio component aims to assess a candidate's leadership practice. The entry and rubrics primarily focus on evaluating knowledge and skills and their application for personal or collective advancement. Candidates will:

  1. Identify a critical need.
  2. Gather and analyze relevant data.
  3. Design a strategy to address the identified need.
  4. Provide a detailed strategy description, implementation plan, and work samples illustrating potential outcomes.
  5. Submit a Written Commentary reflecting on processes, techniques, structured activities, data analysis, feedback, and personal leadership practice.

Scoring.

The LEVEL 4 performance provides clear, consistent, and convincing evidence that the leader identifies a critical need, gathers and analyzes data, forms a strategy, and designs and implements a plan that provide responsive services that address needs in the individual or organization.

The LEVEL 3 performance provides clear evidence that the leader identifies a critical need, gathers and analyzes data, forms a strategy, and designs and implements a plan that provide responsive services that address needs in the individual or organization.

The LEVEL 2 performance provides limited evidence that the leader identifies a critical need, gathers and analyzes data, forms a strategy, and designs and implements a plan that provide responsive services that address needs in the individual or organization.

The LEVEL 1 performance provides little or no evidence that the leader identifies a critical need, gathers and analyzes data, forms a strategy, and designs and implements a plan that provides responsive services that address needs in the individual or organization.

Component 3

Overview

For this entry, candidates must document interactions with junior leaders and provide written commentary analyzing these interactions. The submission should include detailed planning, evidence of leadership practices, instructional materials, and reflections on leadership delivery

Portfolio Entry.

This portfolio component aims to evaluate the candidate's leadership and counseling practice throughout the development and execution of a plan. It emphasizes the candidate's knowledge and skills and their application in: providing an overview of the submission, describing planning and providing supporting materials, and submitting commentaries analyzing and reflecting on counseling and leadership practice, including decision-making processes and impact.

Scoring.

The LEVEL 4 performance provides clear, consistent, and convincing evidence that the leader is able to establish a safe, fair, equitable, and challenging environment that fosters the active engagement of subordinate and junior leaders with the leader, and with each other in sharing ideas and delivering value to the organization.

The LEVEL 3 performance provides clear evidence that the leader is able to establish a safe, fair, equitable, and challenging environment that fosters the active engagement of subordinate and junior leaders with the leader, and with each other in sharing ideas and delivering value to the organization.

The LEVEL 2 performance provides limited evidence that the leader is able to establish a safe, fair, equitable, and challenging environment that fosters the active engagement of subordinate and junior leaders with the leader, and with each other in sharing ideas and delivering value to the organization.

The LEVEL 1 performance provides little or no evidence that the leader is able to establish a safe, fair, equitable, and challenging environment that fosters the active engagement of subordinate and junior leaders with the leader, and with each other in sharing ideas and delivering value to the organization.

Component 4

Overview

Candidates must demonstrate their abilities as effective and reflective practitioners in developing others, using assessments to plan and positively impact peers and junior leaders. It offers the opportunity to showcase skills in gathering information, utilizing assessments, collaborating, and contributing to organizational growth. Submission specifics will vary by content area, aligned with certificate area Standards.

Portfolio Entry.

Candidates must create a profile of one team within their organization, supported by collected information. If the candidate works with multiple individuals sharing similar characteristics, they may constitute a team.

They should submit evidence showcasing how they utilize accumulated team knowledge to analyze their own practice's effectiveness and contribute to collaborative efforts. Reflection on their practice using team information is vital for future improvements.

Candidates must demonstrate gathering relevant team dynamics and performance information, displaying proficiency in assessment practices and principles. They must show how assessment data informs their leadership practice, linking it to organizational impact with specific examples.

Scoring.

The LEVEL 4 performance provides clear, consistent, and convincing evidence the leader develops and uses knowledge of teams gathered from multiple sources to inform practice and assessment; reflects on his or her own practice; and collaborates with others to create improvements that advance team's and/or organization's growth.

The LEVEL 3 performance provides clear evidence the leader develops and uses knowledge of teams gathered from multiple sources to inform practice and assessment; reflects on his or her own practice; and collaborates with others to create improvements that advance team's and/or organization's growth.

The LEVEL 2 performance provides limited evidence the leader develops and uses knowledge of teams gathered from multiple sources to inform practice and assessment; reflects on his or her own practice; and collaborates with others to create improvements that advance team's and/or organization's growth.

The LEVEL 1 performance provides little to no evidence the leader develops and uses knowledge of teams gathered from multiple sources to inform practice and assessment; reflects on his or her own practice; and collaborates with others to create improvements that advance team's and/or organization's growth.
