Leadership Award

Established in 2015, The Order of St. John Baptist de La Salle honors outstanding leaders, mentors, and coaches. Sponsored by the National Board for Leadership Certification, this prestigious award recognizes individuals for their exceptional contributions and commitment to integrity, professionalism, and moral character. A portion of nomination proceeds supports educational institutions across the United States, reflecting the esteemed Lasallian tradition.

Bronze Award

This award is designed to recognize who work diligently to promote the success of leadership, the mission of the NBLC, their profession, and community.

Awardees may have held diverse positions with varying titles and structures. Key criteria include distinguished service and significant contributions to advancing their community of practice through acts of leadership, mentorship, and coaching.

This award is designed to recognize an individual’s long-term support and/or a legacy with significant and long-lasting impact to their communities.

Silver Award

In addition to all criteria for the Bronze Award, nominee should demonstrate a career in leadership, education, or service with quantifiable and enduring contributions to both the community and the NBLC. Noteworthy achievements in roles at or above the operational level of an organization, such as director and c-suite equivalent positions are expected.

At any given time, only 49% of members will be silver awardees.

Gold Award

Nominee should meet criteria for the silver award and meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate continued service to the community and the NBCL through various venues such as: Professional writing and publications; Professional speaking.
  • Gold nominees serve at a strategic level for their community and/or are actively serving in the NBLC governance, or in active support of the Board through activities or initiatives.
  • Achievements must demonstrate an enduring and lasting effect on the community the nominee serves.

    At any given time, no more than 9% of members will be gold medal awardees.

Submitting Nominations

Nomination Process

To nominate for the Order of St. John Baptist de La Salle awards, use the official online nomination form. Submit a brief outline, up to 100 words, citing the main reason(s) for the nomination. Supporting information, limited to 1,500 words or three pages, can be attached. Nominators must be active members of the NBLC or Order of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

For Bronze awards, local chapters handle processing and decisions monthly. Silver and Gold nominations are forwarded to the national office. All nomination materials become property of the Board and will not be returned.

Authorities & Oversight

Authorities:

Bronze Award:

  • Local Chapter President oversees processing within 30 days.
  • Selection Committee handles processing within 60 days if the local chapter is not applicable or if the local President is nominated.
  • National Executive Group (NEG) steps in for processing within 60 days if timely processing isn't feasible by the Committee.

Silver Award:

  • Selection Committee processes within 60 days.
  • National Executive Group (NEG) intervenes if the nomination can't be processed promptly by the Committee.

Gold Award:

  • Selection Committee recommends the recipient to the NEG.
  • NEG makes the final decision within 60 days.

Selection Process:

  • Subcommittee of the Awards Committee, appointed by the President, includes a Selection Committee Chairman and four members.
  • Members serve a 2-year term with possible renewal.
  • For Silver and Gold Awards, the Selection Committee receives electronic packets from the National Office and conveys recommendations independently.
  • The NEG decides on Gold Award approval based on the Selection Committee's recommendation.

Review & Oversight:

  • NBLC ensures integrity by reviewing Chapter awards of bronze categories.
  • Selection Committee conducts reviews on behalf of the National Executive Board.
  • Chapters submit approved Bronze award packets for monthly review and record-keeping.
  • Committee members monitor compliance with criteria; non-compliant chapters may lose award determination privilege, transferred to the Selection Committee.

Award Presentation & Proceedings

Notification of Award

Recipients of silver and gold awards will be notified by the National Office via the nominator, while for bronze awards, the local Chapter President or their designee will inform selectees. The nominator is responsible for induction and presentation of the medallion and certificate for all awards. Gold award medallions will be shipped to the presenting member of the National Executive Group, and additional medallions for shadow boxes will not be available until after the formal presentation. An Executive Board member must be present for the presentation of any gold medals, and the National Office must be notified at least fifteen days prior to the ceremony for attendance coordination. If no member of the NEG is available, past Presidents will be contacted.

The Order of St. John Baptist de La Salle (Category of Award) recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the promotion of the values of the National Board for Leadership certification through a lifetime of service to their community and the board. These individuals have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral character, displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence, and served the United States and their community with distinction."

Saint John Baptist La Salle, born in France in 1651, had a privileged education and planned to work among the wealthy. However, he was compelled to education and mentorship after making a promise to a dying friend. In 1684, St. John formed an institute to serve the needs of society, especially among the poor. For Lasallian leaders and educators, leadership is a means of developing dignity for society's well-being, which is at the heart of the Lasallian tradition. Saint John Baptist is an exemplary leader and educator, embodying competence, moral character, and integrity, making him a symbol of excellence across all industries."

Submission Timeline

Nominations are welcomed until the final Friday of each month. The board will convene on the initial Friday of every month to carefully select nominees for induction into the order.

Nominations must be submitted electronically by the deadline, and decisions will be released in accordance with their prescribed timelines.

Fees & Dues

There are no dues or fees due upon submission. The payee listed on the form will be invoiced a one-time lifetime fee of $225 if the nomination is passed.

This fee covers the cost of the medallion, certificate, case, digital badge, and lapel pin.

A portion of the proceeds is donated to educational institutions in the United States in accordance with Lasallian tradition.

Who was St. John Baptist De La Salle

Born in 1651, John Baptist de La Salle originally aimed to serve the affluent as a priest. However, a pledge to a dying companion redirected his path towards education and communal leadership. In 1684, he established an institute endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church. De La Salle's pioneering methods and writings significantly influenced education and societal development. Canonized as a saint in 1900, he was later designated the Patron Saint of Teachers, mentors, and leaders. The Lasallian tradition emphasizes leadership's role in fostering dignity for societal welfare.
